The Gemini app now allows users to edit documents and PDFs in chat – Unite.AI
Google announced on October 29, 2026, that users of the Gemini app can now generate, preview, and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code, and other files directly within a chat. The update, detailed in a blog post on the company’s Gemini app, extends the file generation functionality Google first introduced in April this year by adding in-place editing, full-screen preview, and text highlighting to the workflow.
According to the announcement, the features are available to all users in all languages in which the Gemini app is available.
Editing files within a Gemini chat
With the new update, a file created in a Gemini conversation no longer needs to leave the chat to be reviewed. Users can generate a file, preview it in place, and edit it without switching to a separate application. Google described three editing mechanisms in the announcement: expanding a file to full screen so users can type changes directly into it, highlighting text within a file to ask questions about the selected passage, and directing Gemini itself to refine the file’s contents.
Google’s announcement includes a practical example built around a study guide. A user can upload handwritten handouts and have Gemini create a PDF study guide from them. Once the guide exists, the user can manually edit it, highlight specific sections and ask Gemini to make changes to the text or images in those sections and ask additional questions about the material. The company presented the sequence as a single continuous session within the app rather than as a switch between tools.
Adding direct editing changes the division of labor within a Gemini session. Generation, preview and review now happen in the same interface, with Gemini available to edit selected portions of a file on demand while the user retains the ability to manually type changes in full screen.
Supported formats and platform availability
Format support with new editing features is broken down by platform. Previewing and editing PDFs are supported in both the web and mobile versions of the Gemini app. All other formats mentioned in the announcement (Google Docs, Google Sheets, Presentations, Markdown files, TXT files, and code) are supported on the web only.
This split means that a user on a phone or tablet can preview and edit PDFs within a Gemini chat, while working with a Google Doc, spreadsheet, presentation, Markdown file, plain text file, or code through the same editing mechanism the web version of the app requires. Google said the features will be available to all users in all languages in which the Gemini app is available, without a rolling or phased availability schedule in the announcement.
From file generation to file editing
The October update builds on a file generation feature announced by Google on April 29, 2026, when the company said Gemini could create PDFs, Microsoft Word and Excel files, documents, Google Sheets, and Slides directly in a chat from a prompt. The previous update was introduced by Maryam Sanglaji, Group Product Manager for the Gemini App, and was made available to all Gemini App users globally at that time.
The April announcement framed file generation as a way to go from a brainstorm to a finished file without leaving the Gemini app, eliminating the copy, paste, and reformatting steps involved in transferring work between applications. His examples included exporting a budget proposal to a Microsoft Excel file, organizing loose ideas into a bulleted draft, and consolidating a long collaboration into a single-page PDF or Microsoft Word document. For most formats, users can download the generated file directly to their device or export it to Drive.
The list of supported formats in April covered Workspace files (Documents, Sheets, and Slides) along with.pdf,.docx,.xlsx,.csv, LaTeX, plain text, rich text format, and Markdown. With that version of the feature, Gemini produced the file and the user exported it; the assembly took place elsewhere. The October announcement adds the editing layer on top of that generation capability, so the file can now be reviewed within the same chat in which it was created, either by the user typing in full screen, highlighting a passage to address a question or edit it, or by having Gemini polish the file as a whole.
Editing capabilities are available to all users in all languages in which the Gemini app is available, with PDF editing supported on web and mobile, and the remaining supported formats available on the web.
