Sierra partners with Stripe to bring payments to AI agent calls – Unite.AI

Sierra on October 20, 2026 announced a partnership with Stripe that allows customers to converse with one of its AI agents, pay and receive a receipt on the same call. Sierra said healthcare payments company Cedar was one of the first companies to accept payments over the phone through the integration.

In the announcement, Sierra said payments are taking on an increasingly important role as agents move from single support-only conversations to interactions that can generate revenue. However, at the time of purchase, customers are often directed to another system or sent a payment link, splitting a process that the company says should be seamless. Sierra said the partnership removes this friction so that the conversation, payment and receipt remain on a single call.

When paying, the agent switches to secure payment mode and the customer enters the card details on the phone keypad. The entry is routed to Stripe, which processes the payment. The agent then comes back online to confirm the transaction and help the customer with whatever they need next.

Early Cedar Deployment

Cedar’s business helps health systems and physician groups streamline billing and payments for patients. Sierra noted that medical bills can be confusing and stressful, with a single visit sometimes producing separate charges or insurance adjustments. Patients calling for a bill can now have their questions answered and paid in the same conversation.

According to Sierra, 71.3% of calls in which patients initiate a payment with Kora, Cedar’s agent, end in a successful payment.

“Medical bills create a time of real anxiety for patients, and historically, getting a question answered and actually paying the bill have been two separate and disjointed steps,” said Dugan Winkie, Chief Strategy Officer at Cedar. “By working with Sierra and Stripe, we have filled this gap.”

Stripe App Marketplace List

The Sierra platform is now listed in the Stripe App Marketplace, a step that the company says allows any business to connect their agent to their Stripe account without creating a one-time integration. The listing identifies Sierra Technologies, Inc. as the developer, rates the app as free, marks it as only visible via the API, and lists it as working with payments. The listed functionality securely collects customer payment details in conversations with Sierra agents and creates payment methods in Stripe.

Based on the permissions in the list, an installed Sierra app receives read-write access to payment methods, which represent the customer’s payment instruments, and read-only access to accounts. The release notes in the list show version 0.0.4 from September 10, 2026, which allowed installation directly from Sierra, and version 0.0.6 from September 23, 2026, which allowed Sierra to read the account’s business details to improve the onboarding experience.

An early launch of PCI compliant payments

The partnership extends a payments feature introduced by Sierra on April 7, 2026, which the company described as the first PCI Level 1 compliant payment feature for AI agents via chat and voice. Sierra said at the time that the launch made it the first PCI Level 1 compliant conversational AI platform, and that the capability is verified by the Visa Global Service Provider Registry.

With this architecture, customers enter card or ACH details via keypad during voice calls or via secure embedded forms in chat. This information travels directly to the payment processor or gateway already used by the company; the agent itself never sees the raw card data and only receives non-sensitive elements such as payment status and the last four digits of the card. As a payment is captured, the flow follows a fixed, server-validated sequence of prompts rather than template-generated prompts, according to Sierra, which also makes a comprehensive compliance and shared responsibility attestation matrix available through the Sierra Trust Center.

Sierra said in April that SiriusXM handles many daily inbound payment calls through its secure voice payment flow, and that one financial services company has achieved an 85% resolution rate by automating card activation by voice.

Personal Agent Protocol

Sierra said the payments are part of a broader collaboration with Stripe that includes work on the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard unveiled on October 6, 2026. Meta and Sierra are building the protocol alongside Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart to define how personal agents interact with businesses, and Sierra said the effort includes defining how payments should work when a personal agent is acting on someone’s behalf.

Protocol sessions are based on OAuth, an established standard for access authorization. Sierra said scheduled payment extensions could allow a personal agent to complete a purchase without sharing credit card information. Kevin Miller, Stripe’s head of payments, said in the protocol announcement that Stripe is helping provide businesses with a standard way to recognize their customers’ agents, interact with them efficiently and shape customer relationships.

Sierra said it plans to publish the protocol’s v0.1 specification later in October 2026, host design workshops with interested parties, and publish a reference implementation to help developers get started.
