OpenAI Secures $11 Billion Seed Funding at $1.25 Trillion Valuation – Unite.AI

Reuters reported on November 6, 2026 that OpenAI had closed an initial $11 billion in financing, the first part of a round that valued the company at $1.25 trillion, citing a source familiar with the matter.

The amount raised so far represents only a portion of OpenAI’s original goal of up to $30 billion. Two investors said the valuation had fallen from the $1.5 trillion level the company initially sought, and that SoftBank and MGX participated. The funding remains an initial close within a larger plan, with the original fundraising goal unfulfilled.

A cooler market for AI valuations

The funding came after a month of cooling sentiment towards AI companies. Some investors have valued Anthropic’s planned initial public offering at about $1.5 trillion, below previous expectations of about $2 trillion. These lowered expectations provide the immediate market context for OpenAI’s lower valuation ambition.

Recurring supporters and existing funding

In its March 31, 2026 funding announcement, OpenAI said it closed a prior round with $122 billion in committed capital at a post-money valuation of $852 billion. Amazon, NVIDIA and SoftBank supported this financing, with continued participation from Microsoft. SoftBank was co-led with a16z, DE Shaw Ventures, MGX, TPG and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates. SoftBank and MGX were already part of OpenAI’s investor base, so their reported participation extends existing relationships.

OpenAI said the March round raised more than $3 billion from individual investors through banking channels, the first time it has extended participation through that route. The company expanded its revolving credit facility to approximately $4.7 billion, which was undrawn at the close of the round. Together, these details show the breadth of capital pipelines that OpenAI had raised by March.

Operational scale and computing demand

OpenAI’s March announcement also detailed the business behind its capital requirements. The company said it was generating $2 billion in monthly revenue at the time, with enterprise customers accounting for more than 40% of revenue, and expected enterprise revenue to reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026.

OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users and more than 50 million subscribers in March and described sustained access to computing as a strategic advantage that advances research, improves products, expands access, and structurally reduces delivery costs at scale.

Its cloud partners include Microsoft, Oracle, AWS, CoreWeave and Google Cloud, while its chip strategy includes NVIDIA, AMD, AWS Trainium, Cerebras and an OpenAI chip developed with Broadcom. The company also works with Oracle, SBE and SoftBank on data centers. This portfolio places fundraising in an operational context. OpenAI’s stated rationale is that no single architecture can efficiently meet the needs of the entire AI frontier, making infrastructure breadth central to its deployment strategy.

The partial closure and reduced valuation ambition show that OpenAI’s operational scale does not eliminate investor scrutiny. For the rest of the round, the central tension is between an IT strategy that requires significant capital and an AI market where valuation expectations have cooled.
